Throughout the year pupils earn House Points for a variety of different positive contributions to school. These include participation in extra-curricular activities, excellent homework, positive contributions to lessons and excellent attendance. They can also lose points for poor behaviour, missing homework and being late for school. Pupils also earn points for inter-house competitions which are organised by various departments.
This year, pupils have achieved an unprecedented number of house points, totalling just over 145,000 points, an increase of over 50,000 on the previous school year. Despite this, the competition between the three houses has been intense throughout the year – and in particular once again between Clitherow and Haydock. Last year, they were separated by less than 200 points, and this time it is even closer, with the winning house only 56 points ahead, meaning that the overall competition went to the final event of the year before the winners could be discovered!
For the third consecutive year, third place went to Arrowsmith. Mr Chester’s house were victorious on Sports Day but were unable to overhaul the other two houses in the overall competition, nevertheless accruing a creditable 43,241 points. Once again the bridesmaid this year is Clitherow, with Mr Walton’s house fighting tooth and nail to the very end, amassing an incredible 50,909 points. They could not however stop Haydock winning their fifth overall House Championship in six years and third in a row, Miss Caton’s house triumphing with a phenomenal 50,965 points.
Congratulations also to the top House Point earners in each year group: Edmund Keating (8C, Haydock, 971), Azino Osiriomo (9S, Clitherow, 657), Ayaan Malji (10R, Clitherow, 717) and the top achiever in the school, Grace Grisdale (7U, Arrowsmith, 1,034). A huge well done also to Victoria Okeowo (8P, Haydock, 870), Toluwani Adeoso (8R, Clitherow, 846), Isla Wallace (7O, Arrowsmith, 752), Daniel Tootill (7C, Haydock, 733) and David Ogunsumi (8U, Arrowsmith, 705); all of the above pupils achieved a Headteacher’s Commendation for over 700 House Points. All of these pupils had a special celebratory lunch with Mr Hankin this Thursday and will receive a bonus mystery prize in the new school year!
Next year, there will be different inter-house competitions, and some changes to how house points are awarded which should make the competition even more interesting!
