On Tuesday, 24th June, we hosted our third annual Culture Day, a vibrant celebration of the rich culture and diversity within our school community. The event was a tremendous success, with more than 200 pupils and staff in attendance, joined by school governors, Amin (last year’s Head Boy), and a former pupil, Evi, whose vision helped to create our first Culture Day in 2023.
Representing over twenty different countries, nearly seventy children proudly wore traditional costumes, showcasing their vibrant heritage. Culture Day provides a unique opportunity for everyone to celebrate their own background while exploring the traditions, music, and cuisines of their peers.
This year’s event featured an impressive array of food stalls serving dishes from around the world.
The day began with an energetic African drumming performance, setting a lively and welcoming tone. This was followed by a moving rendition of the original song “Differences”, written and composed by Alice. Her lyrics conveyed a powerful message: that despite our differences in race, culture, or language, we are all united as part of God’s creation, made in His image.
Pupils enjoyed delicacies from Scotland, Ireland, Romania, Poland, Ghana, Nigeria, Italy, India, Pakistan, China, Brazil, New Zealand, and many more countries. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as pupils eagerly shared information and displayed items from their respective cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation throughout the school community.
The celebration culminated with an vibrant performance by an African dance troupe, whose energy and rhythm captivated the audience.
Mr Harwood and Mrs Milburn, together with pupils, organised the event and received a well-deserved round of applause for creating such a memorable and enriching day. Pupils also showed appreciation to the original creator, Evi, who shared in the joy and pride of seeing the event grow and thrive.
We look forward to celebrating many more Culture Days in the years to come!
