Extended Learning Day 5

On Wednesday 9 July, all pupils in school participated in our fifth and final ‘Extended Learning Day’ of the school year.

Year 7 took part in a day all about their next steps and developing themselves as a whole person. They learnt about the possible options post-16 by listening to the Apprenticeship team from Preston College and taking part in a quiz. They also spent sometime reflecting on their use of mobile phones and the internet in order to make sure they are communicating appropriately and safely with each other. They worked on their team building skills with the Air Cadets and discovered just what it takes to earn the bronze Duke of Edinburgh award using map skills and hazard awareness. Finally they learnt how to help someone out if they are in need of medical attention by using the recovery position and CPR.

Year 8 pupils took part in an inspiring and engaging carousel of inclusive and adapted sports. Activities included sitting volleyball, table cricket, curling, blind football, Boccia, seated archery and Pickleball. Each sport was thoughtfully adapted to reflect the needs of individuals with different disabilities, giving pupils a rich understanding of how barriers to participation can be overcome. Throughout the day, pupils embraced the opportunity to try something new and showed great enthusiasm and determination. They gained a deeper awareness of the challenges faced by those with physical and sensory impairments. The experience encouraged empathy, teamwork and resilience, while also highlighting the importance of inclusive opportunities in sport. Pupils reflected on how sport can provide accessible and meaningful participation for all. They discussed how adaptations can empower individuals to take part, regardless of ability. The day also reinforced key British values, particularly mutual respect and tolerance of others. Pupils were respectful of each other’s efforts and abilities, and celebrated one another’s successes. The atmosphere throughout the day was one of encouragement, inclusion and shared learning. It was a powerful reminder of how sport can unite and inspire all individuals.

As part of their geography studies on land use in UK cities, Year 9 pupils visited Liverpool on Wednesday 9 July to carry out fieldwork supporting their classroom learning. The weather was perfect for exploring the city, and pupils carried out an environmental quality survey and a pedestrian count to investigate patterns of urban land use and how different areas of the city serve a variety of functions. To deepen their understanding of how cities evolve, pupils also visited the Museum of Liverpool, where they explored how the city has transformed over time—from its industrial past to its modern regeneration. The trip provided valuable real-world insights into urban geography and helped bring the topic to life.

The Year 10 day was lead by the RE department. Pupils were focusing on completing the content of their GCSE unit “Life and Death”. During the day, pupils learnt about Humanist responses to Death and Humanist funerals, Religious symbols and artefacts linked to beliefs about Eternal life, Requiem music, Catholic beliefs about Heaven, Hell and judgement and all pupils were taken on a trip to English Martyrs church where Fr Chappell led sessions on the features of a Catholic funeral. It was a fully packed day of learning and Year 10 have successfully covered all of the RE GCSE content for this year.

Thank you to all staff and visitors for their hard work and support in ensuring our pupils enjoy these broader experiences – both on this day and throughout the year – and to all pupils for their commitment, exemplary behaviour and enthusiasm.
